What is Trochanteric Bursitis?

The trochanter is the medical name for the top of your femur, the long bone in your upper leg. It is surrounded by cushioning fluid sacs called bursa. Trochanteric bursitis is an inflammation of these bursa, most often on the outside of your hip. This condition can be caused by arthritis, back problems, small differences in leg length, walking or running on banked surfaces, or from a fall or injury to the hip.

How Can Massage Help Trochanteric Bursitis?

Your doctor may prescribe injections and recommend activity limitations, but you should also consult with your massage therapist, who can help speed you on the way to recovery. Your massage therapist will seek out soft tissue issues in the muscles, tendons, and ligaments that surround the bursa and may use a variety of techniques to reduce the stress that is the source of the inflammation in the bursa.

It is likely that issues outside the hip cause part of the stress on the bursa, so your therapist will also release tightness in your lower back, your gluteus, and down the length of your leg.

Your massage therapist can also teach you some self-massage techniques to help between sessions. It's likely that you will need to book several treatments to eliminate your bursitis pain. Your therapist may also recommend some massage aids that can help you reach trigger points deep within the layers of your glutes.
